Assembly’s committee on environment called for in depth study for mysterious bluish colour of Lukha river
The Assembly’s Committee on Environment on Monday conducted an inspection for mysterious bluish colour of Lukha River.
The Committee has called for indepth study into the pollution of the Lukha river in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills District.
“The committee has sought a report from Meghalaya Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), who is the authority concerned to do the detailed scientific study so that the report can be placed in the table of the house,” said Himalaya Shangpliang.
Since 2007, the water has turned bluish and it is the annual phenomenon which several fishes died.
The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board had carried out a detailed scientific study after the first incident was reported in February 2007. The report had stated that due unscientific coal mining the water is highly acidic.
Earlier the Committee inspect the downstream of the Lukha river near the Sunapur Bridge. Later the committee inspect the confluence of Lukha and Lunar river.
Member of the committee who were present in the inspection include Chairman of the Environment Committee and Mawphlang MLA SK Sunn, Comingone Ymbon, Raliang MLA, Himalaya Shangpliang Mawsynram MLA besides Deputy Commissioner East Jaintia Hills E Kharmaliki, Additional Deputy Commissioner SS Syiemlieh, senior official and scientist of the MSPCB and CPCB.
