Awareness on Cyber Crimes & Social Advocacy held in East Jaintia Hills
In a bid to raise awareness and sensitize the public on cyber fraud, cyber spam, cyber scams, cyber crime against women and children, the District Social Welfare office, East Jaintia Hills District on Monday organized an awareness programme on Cyber Crimes and Social Advocacy at Dkhiah East Community Hall, East Jaintia Hills District. The programme was attended by local headmen from different villages in the District.
Additional Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills District B Jyrwa spoke about cyber frauds carried out by cybercriminals and gave a presentation on Social Engineering Frauds namely CVV/ OTP fraud, UPI Phishing Fraud, Fraud by requesting Money QR code/ Link Google Pay/ PhonePe/ Paytm, Fraud through Google Docs App, OLX, eCommerce Platforms, Amazon Pay, Gift Certificate, Cashback Offers, Screen Sharing apps, Simcard swapping and Financial Frauds using Social Media Platform like fake social media accounts, Facebook, and other frauds that included Edited Google Customer care number, Ransomware attacks, lottery fraud, online jobs fraud and mobile application fraud. He advised the public to remain alert while performing online transactions, digital banking, and other online platforms to avoid falling into the trap of cyber frauds and he also stressed on the need to educate children about the risk associated with online activity, social media platforms, and how they can protect themselves from cyber crimes.
He also informed the gathering about the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, a platform where the Government of India has taken the initiative to facilitate victims/ complainants of cybercrime for reporting cyber crime complaints online with a special focus on cyber crimes against women and children. He urged the public to report cybercrime complaints online on the portal or by calling the National Helpline Number- 1930. “In cases of financial loss due to cyber fraud, it is very important for the victims to report on the portal within 24 hours so that the money lost can be recovered at the earliest possible” he added.
District Child Protection Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Teibor Kyndiah in his speech said that cybercrime can include many types like a profit-driven or criminal activity that includes Online grooming, Live streaming, cyber bullying, online child trafficking, sexual harassment, and violation of privacy. He appealed to the parents to monitor their children while using mobile phones, and computers and to use parental control software on their devices so as to regulate their children’s online habits for their safety.
The other topics covered during the programme include “Social Advocacy” by R Patlong, Programme Manager, MCSWA, and “Safe and Secure Environment for Women in context to Cyber Crime” by H Pale, Case Worker.
