Beauty with a warning: Sohra’s natural attractions come with safety advisory

As the monsoon season draws near, the Office of the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Sohra Civil Sub-Division, has issued a safety advisory for tourists visiting the region’s scenic spots. The advisory calls for heightened caution around waterfalls, cliffs, jungles, and other natural attractions, which can become hazardous during heavy rainfall.
Sohra, known for its stunning landscapes and lush greenery, attracts thousands of visitors each year. However, authorities have warned that the very elements that make Sohra a paradise can also pose serious risks when not approached responsibly. Slippery trails, strong river currents, unstable cliff edges, and thick vegetation in jungles can quickly turn a leisurely visit into a dangerous situation.
In the advisory, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Sohra Civil Sub-Division urged tourists to avoid exploring alone, especially near water bodies or in dense forested areas. Swimming in unknown locations is strongly discouraged due to the presence of hidden rocks and unpredictable currents. Parents have been advised to keep children under close supervision and prevent them from getting too close to steep drops or fast-moving streams.
Visitors are also reminded to stick to clearly marked trails and avoid leaning over cliffs or venturing near unprotected edges. Appropriate footwear is recommended to navigate slippery or uneven paths safely. Authorities are encouraging tourists to hire certified local guides when exploring remote areas, as they are trained to identify and navigate potential dangers. Tourists should also check weather forecasts before beginning their journeys, as sudden rain can make many areas inaccessible.
To reinforce these safety measures, all designated tourist sites in Sohra are required to deploy trained lifeguards and safety personnel, install railings and barriers at high-risk zones, provide proper signage, and display emergency contact information prominently. Rescue equipment must also be kept ready, especially in areas near water bodies.
In case of emergencies, visitors can contact Sohra Police Station at +91 7638900103 or Sohra Community Health Centre at +91 8837360612.
While the natural beauty of Sohra continues to captivate travellers from around the world, the administration is urging everyone to explore with care. “Your safety is our top priority. We welcome you to experience the magic of Sohra, but we ask that you do so responsibly,” said the Additional Deputy Commissioner.
