Bhutan recognized Assam as an economic force: Assam CM
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted Bhutan’s recognition of Assam as a rising economic force following his participation in Bhutan’s 117th National Day celebrations.
The visit, marked by warm hospitality, facilitated discussions on energy collaboration, water management, and regional economic development.
“Bhutan’s invitation and treatment during my visit signified acknowledgement of Assam’s potential as an economic force in the region,” Sarma told reporters here on Thursday.
Sarma noted Bhutan’s significant hydropower potential of 30,000 MW, of which only 3,000 MW is currently harnessed.
“Assam, facing rising electricity demand, is considering investments in hydropower projects in Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim. Bhutan’s Sankosh River was identified as a potential resource for irrigation in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and for drinking water supply in Guwahati,” Sarma said.
“Bhutan agreed to share early flood warning data with Assam, an important step toward mitigating flood risks in the state. Discussions included leveraging Bhutan’s water resources for electricity and irrigation,” Sarma also said.
“Our talks also touched on Bhutan’s proposed modern city at Gelephu, located 10 km from Assam’s border, with a focus on its economic vibrancy,” he said.
Sarma hinted at a more business-oriented dialogue during the upcoming “Advantage Assam 2.0” summit.
Sarma clarified that agreements on shared resources and projects would be formalized between the Governments of India and Bhutan, not directly with Assam.
“This was a courtesy visit but in the next, there would be a more business-minded visit,:” he added.
