BJP asks MDA not to postpone GHADC elections
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday asked the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government not to postpone the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
“MDA partners should not postpone the GHADC election if they claim there is no corruption in GHADC. People want elections to be held in time because people are fed up with rampant corruption in Garo Hills,” BJP spokesperson, Bernard N Marak said in a statement.
He said the BJP at the Centre wanted corruption free governance in all the states of India and that’s what BJP here wants Meghalaya to be.
He also alleged that some partners are taking advantage of the alliance and money from the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) violating a series of norms.
“How can Timothy D Shira (Deputy Speaker) say there is no corruption when his own MDC was caught taking out money in his wife’s name from GHADC on non-existent projects? The RTI findings flooded the social media a few weeks ago. Was Timothy sleeping? Maybe Timothy and Saleng A Sangma (NCP state president) forgot the definition of “corruption” but people of Garo Hills know the definition of “corruption”,” Marak said.
He also stated that if the GHADC election is held in time, people will reject most of the present leaders.
“So BJP dares, if there is no corruption as Timothy and Saleng claimed then they should not postpone the election of GHADC because people of Garo Hills are ready to give answers to the corruption in Garo Hills,” the BJP leader said.
“And without doubt, the BJP led Executive Committee will lead Garo Hills Autonomous District Council in the coming term,” he further added.
He said in GHADC, a bureaucrat has been appointed as the Secretary of the Council (unlike KHADC and JHADC) for six months to streamline the irregularities in GHADC.
He said matters have changed so much in GHADC that in some matters the Secretary to the Executive Committee is working without the consent of the Executive Committee now.
Few days ago, there was an attempt to introduce GST in the online application in GHADC which was being developed by IT cell (Mbose) which BJP complained and put a hold to.
Another incident, a committee was being formed secretly to supervise the incomplete projects funded by Council’s own fund and the members of the committee included state engineers.
“This was also stopped by BJP. The question is, why was GST being introduced in GHADC? 18% extra was going to be imposed from every individual probably to recover the money misappropriated by council authorities and since there were anomalies the auditor suggested to recover through GST. Is this not corruption? Or should we say exploitation?
Even the tax for trading for non tribals (TNT) has been hiked three times more in some cases without the knowledge of the public. Why? Who will benefit out of it?
GST is a tax paid to the State and the Centre, a secret attempt was made by GHADC to impose 18% tax from all individuals to make up the Centre funds misused by authorities in GHADC. That’s corruption as well as exploitation,” he said.
Marak claimed that the BJP has stopped GHADC authorities from imposing GST in GHADC.
