BJP needs to counter religious card in Meghalaya: Kharkrang
BJP chief spokesperson M Kharkrang on Saturday said there is need for the party to change its election campaigning strategy in Meghalaya.
His statement came after the BJP faced a humiliating defeat in the just concluded Gambegre bye election where its candidate and sitting MDC Bernard N Marak forfieted security deposite by securing only 710 votes.
Speaking to reporters, Kharkrang admitted that a lot of things had gone wrong for the party. He said that it is high time for the party to counter religious card that is working against it during election time.
“And now the next step is to, we will sit down introspect and find out what went wrong and probably we might have to change our strategy, how we campaign here Meghalaya because many times, every time elections are there, there’s a play of the religious card and now we have to counter that.
We are trying in 2023 election but I think there is lot more for us to do,” he said.
“So I think the next step now is all the senior leaders of the state party will sit down and be honest and look into what are the drawbacks and then we have to take rectifier actions before the next elections,” he added.
Asked, the chief spokesperson said, “There’s a lot of lot of work for us to do because when you speak to everyone, everyone agree that if BJP government is there, development will come, development will be there because they have compared the way way our state is developing with other States. But when it comes just at the fag end before the election before the casting of votes, then the religious card come to the picture.”
“So, this has been happening for long time and I think now for next election we have to really work out how to counter this,”he stated.
