BJP pays tribute to Vajpayee on his 1st death anniversary
SHILLONG: The BJP Meghalaya state on Friday paid rich tribute to former Prime Minister and founder leader of the party late Atal Behari Vajpayee, on his first death anniversary.
Speakers during the function held at BJP state office here in the city highlighted the contributions of late Vajpayee towards the Nation in general and the North-eastern States in particular.
He was remembered for his inventiveness in creating the DONER Ministry to look after the North- Eastern States for overall development in the region.
He was conferred India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee in 2015. The administration of Narendra Modi declared in 2014 that Vajpayee’s birthday, 25th December, would be marked as Good Governance Day.
He was among the founder member of the Bharatiya Jana Singh, thereafter, the birth of the Bharatiya Janata Party, in 1980 with Vajpayee as its first President . He was a member of the Indian Parliament for over five decades, having been elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house, ten times and twice to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house. He served as the Member of the Parliament for Lucknow until 2009 when he retired from active politics due to health concerns. Vajpayee became the Minister of External Affairs in the Cabinet of Prime Minister, Mosarji Desai.
He was also conferred India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, by the Pesident of India, Pranab Mukherjee in 2015. He will be always remembered as a man of “No Religion” and for his Humanity.
Members present at the function observed a one- minute – silence to pay respect to the departed soul.
