BJP to field Mission Ranjan Das, Rameswar Teli for Rajya Sabha bypolls
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday announced the names of former Union Minister Rameswar Teli and Mission Ranjan Das as candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by elections in the state scheduled for September 3.
Teli was the former Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, while Mission Ranjan Das, a former MLA is the chairman of Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC).
The elections to two Rajya Sabha necessitated after Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and former Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhta Prasad Tasa were elected to the Lok Sabha in the recently-concluded elections from Dibrugarh and Kaziranga seats respectively.
Apart from Teli and Das, the saffron party announced the name of six other candidates for the Rajya Sabha bypolls from different states.
The BJP has fielded Union Ministers Ravneet Singh Bittu from Rajasthan and George Kurian from Madhya Pradesh.
The ruling party has also named Bar Council of India Chairman and senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra from Bihar, former BJD leader Mamata Mohanta as its candidate from Odisha and Rajib Bhattacharjee from Tripura.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled the election for 12 vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha for September 3.
