BJP to object NPP’s claim to have majority to form new EC
The state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to object to the claims made by NPP-led Garo Hills Democratic Coalition (GHDC) to form the new EC in the GHADC as it is allegedly in violation of a court verdict.
The BJP has also reiterated that it should be given the chance to lead the new executive committee in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.
The decision of the party was made during a felicitation programme held at the state office on Saturday. The two newly elected MDCs – Bernard N Marak and Pramod Koch – were felicitated by the BJP state president Ernest Mawrie.
Marak has defeated the NPP from South Tura, which is the home constituency of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in the just concluded GHADC polls.
Speaking to media persons, Mawrie informed that although the NPP is staking claim to form the EC but the BJP is yet to receive any letter of invitation for discussion or to be part and parcel of the EC.
On the other hand, Marak has alleged that the NPP cannot stake claim with only 15 members as it is in violation of an order passed by the High Court in the case of E Sangma and W Sangma.
“15 is not a magic number in the district council because the court has given a verdict that the majority will be 17…If they want to form the EC, they need 17,” he said.
According to him, if 1 of the 15 members will become the chairman of the GHADC then it’s a tie between the ruling and opposition (14-14).
Accusing the NPP of misleading the Governor, the BJP leader said that the party has decided to file an objection to ensure that the court order should not be violated.
“We will file the objection before the Governor as he has been misled as that court verdict has not been apprised to him by anyone. We will give this information to the Governor along with our objection,” Marak said.
Stating that they are yet to take any decision on whether to extend support to the NPP, he said the speculation that BJP is supporting NPP is false since the party will stick to its principle in fighting against corruption.
“If we have to be in the EC, it has to be led by the BJP as we are not going to support EC which is led by other parties. If we are going to be involved it has to be the BJP-led EC…We have made our stand clear that the CEM’s chair has to go to the BJP,” Marak said.
Asked, the BJP state president said that the party is also focusing its demand for an inquiry by the central bureau of investigation (CBI) into the alleged misappropriation of funds and irregularities in the GHADC.
“We will not compromise on our stand for zero tolerance against corruption. Whoever form the EC in the district council if they come out clear that there should be inquiry against misutilization of funds and irregularities, we will agree (to support them),” he said.
Mawrie however said the state party has already sent its report to the central leadership. “We hope by tomorrow evening, we will get direction from the Centre on how to go with this regarding the formation of the new EC in GHADC,” he informed.
