Cabinet approves mandatory medical service policy, CM says doctors in Meghalaya will double in next five years
The state Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Mandatory Medical Service Policy for medical students pursuing academic curriculum under the state government sponsorship or the state quota.
Addressing media persons, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the government has decided to come up with the mandatory medical service policy as “we are not calling it a bond anymore”.
He said the policy seeks to exempt doctors, who are working in non-profit organizations and central institutions.
“So once they fall under that category, the doctors working in such hospitals for example NEIGRIHMS which is a central institution, Holy Cross or the Doctor Norman Tunnel Hospital and so on and so forth, which are in the not for profit organization category, the doctors who work in those hospitals will also be exempted from mandatory service in government hospitals. This is being done with the view that they are serving the people of the state by being in the state,” Sangma stated.

“We are also looking at from the point of view that we are hopeful that in the days and years to come we will be having more medical doctors coming in and we expect the numbers to almost double if not triple in the next five years time,” he added.
