Call for originality at SHG Mela in Jowai
Grassroots, in collaboration with the Society for Urban and Rural Empowerment (SURE) and the Jaintia Hills Development Society (JHDS), orchestrated a one-day Mela on March 4 in Iawmusiang, Jowai. Aimed at showcasing the achievements of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and entrepreneurs who had undergone training facilitated by Grassroots. This training, supported by Quest Alliance in Bangalore, spanned various locales within the West Jaintia Hills District.
Vivian Pajuh, the Project Lead at Grassroots, emphasized the significance of partnerships with NGOs dedicated to societal upliftment, which enabled them to extend their reach even to the remote corners of the district. He expressed gratitude towards Quest Alliance for their unwavering support not only in training initiatives but also in backing the SHG fair.
Dr. HH Mohrmen, Secretary of SURE, reflected on his experiences visiting fairs, exhibitions, and expos organized by governmental and non-governmental bodies, noting a prevalent trend of uniformity in the products showcased. He highlighted the importance of innovation, cautioning against mere replication, as a surplus of similar products could lead to unproductive competition among entrepreneurs. Felicia Liam of Grassroots presided over the event.
The Mela proved to be a resounding success, drawing groups and entrepreneurs from various corners of the district to exhibit and sell their diverse range of products. Offerings included food processing items such as fruit juices, wines, chemical-free vegetables, bakery goods, as well as crafts made from cane, bamboo, and other materials.
