Celebrating Women’s Day across Meghalaya: Empowering voices and actions
Various organizations across Meghalaya joined hands to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2024, recognizing and empowering women in different spheres of society.
The Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya, in association with the BSF Wives’ Welfare Association (BWWA), held a vibrant event at its Shillong headquarters and field formations. The day was dedicated to promoting justice, dignity, and equality among women. The celebration featured a range of activities, including cultural programs and games, highlighting the invaluable roles women play and their remarkable achievements. Addressing the gathering, the president of BWWA Meghalaya encouraged women to embrace responsibilities, especially those with spouses deployed in remote border areas. She emphasized the pivotal role women play in various fields and urged them to showcase their talents confidently, leveraging platforms like BWWA to foster personal growth and contribute to societal prosperity.
In Mawsmai, the Lawei Ban Phyrnai Cluster Level Federation Women Multipurpose Cooperative Society, Ltd. organized its 2nd Annual General Meeting alongside International Women’s Day celebrations. Under the theme “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress,” the event emphasized the importance of educating and empowering girls to pursue their dreams and contribute positively to society. Notable dignitaries, including Smti Saloni Verma, SDO (C) Sohra Civil Sub Division and representatives from various sectors, graced the occasion. The program also included the distribution of loans to self-help groups and the felicitation of older persons, highlighting the community’s commitment to women’s empowerment.
The National Sample Survey Office (Field Operations Division) in Shillong marked the day with a program focusing on the theme “Investing in Women: Accelerate Progress.” Officials highlighted the historical significance of International Women’s Day and emphasized the need for continued investment in women’s education and empowerment. A special segment called ‘Spotlight on Amazing Stories’ and a quiz competition highlighted the achievements of remarkable women across different fields, inspiring attendees to strive for excellence.
Further contributing to the empowerment of women, the National Law University Meghalaya organized a capacity-building program in collaboration with various institutions. The initiative aimed to enhance digital literacy among women entrepreneurs, equipping them with essential skills for success in the digital age. Notable figures, including Smt. Delina Khongdup from the National Commission for Women, emphasized the importance of digital empowerment in fostering gender equality and inclusive growth.
Additionally, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU), in partnership with Synod College, organized an inter-college event. Renowned speakers Iamon Syiem, former Chairperson of Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights as the chief guest and Prof. Polly Vauquline, Department of Women’s Studies, Gauhati University shared insights on inclusivity and gender equality, highlighting the need to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes to create a more equitable society.
Attendees were urged to recognize and address the challenges faced by women, fostering a culture of respect, inclusion, and empowerment.
