Chaos in Assam Assembly: Deputy Speaker injured, house adjourned amid clashes
The Assam Legislative Assembly turned into a battleground on Monday over a scuffle between ruling and opposition members led to Deputy Speaker Numal Momin sustaining injuries outside the House forcing Speaker Biswajit Daimary to adjourn the House for 10 minutes amid loud protests from both sides.
The controversy erupted when ruling party MLAs accused Congress legislator Nurul Huda of physically assaulting Deputy Speaker Numal Momin outside the House, resulting in injuries to his left hand. Momin later entered the Assembly with his hand bandaged, further fueling the political uproar. The ruling party strongly condemned the alleged attack, demanding immediate action, while the opposition dismissed the claims as exaggerated and politically motivated.

The high-voltage drama unfolded as Congress legislators, dressed in black as a mark of protest, demanded action against BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi. Kurmi had allegedly hurled abuses and attempted to assault opposition MLAs inside the House on March 21. Before the session began, Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) members staged a sit-in outside the Speaker’s chamber, accusing the ruling party of suppressing their voices.
“The physical assault by Rupjyoti Kurmi has made us feel unsafe in the House. The opposition is being subjected to BJP MLA’s atrocities, and we are protesting for our safety,” AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam stated.
As tensions escalated, ruling party MLAs accused Congress’s Rupahi MLA Nurul Huda of physically attacking Deputy Speaker Numal Momin during the protest, triggering a heated confrontation.
Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged Speaker Daimary to take immediate action and called for a police investigation.
“I spoke with Numal Momin, and he confirmed that he will file an FIR at Dispur Police Station. I also request the Speaker to look into the matter,” Sarma said.
The ruling party also highlighted that Momin, a tribal leader, had been attacked within the Assembly complex, calling it an unprecedented act of aggression against indigenous leaders.
“This sets a dangerous precedent—an indigenous tribal leader being attacked inside the Assembly complex. This is a serious matter,” Sarma warned.
Opposition leaders denied the allegations and accused the ruling party of using the incident for political mileage.
Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia countered the claims and demanded that a House Committee be formed to investigate the matter instead of involving the police.
“The matter is being exaggerated for political gains. We demand a fair investigation by a House Committee,” Saikia said.
Earlier, Congress MLAs continued their protest inside the House, insisting that action be taken against BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi for his alleged misconduct. AIUDF MLAs also attempted to bring bamboo structures inside the House as part of their demonstration, but security personnel stopped them.
Deputy Speaker Numal Momin stated, “While stopping Congress MLAs Nurul Huda and Wajed Ali Choudhury from entering the Assembly in black attire, I got hurt during the pushing and pulling. I have been an MLA for nine years and Deputy Speaker for four years, but such an incident has never occurred before. It was truly unfortunate.”
Momin also submitted a medical report on his injuries to the Speaker as evidence.
The Congress MLAs, who staged their protest by wearing black, reiterated their demand for action against Kurmi, whom they accused of verbally abusing and attempting to physically assault them on March 21.
In response, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia urged the Speaker to review CCTV footage before taking any action.
Speaker Biswajit Daimary assured all members that he would thoroughly examine the footage before making a final decision. “The evidence will be reviewed, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” he said.
