CITU slams US for inhumane treatment of deported Indians, urges Indian govt to act
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has strongly condemned the inhumane and degrading treatment of deported Indian workers by the United States government, demanding immediate intervention from the Indian government to protect its citizens.
In a scathing statement issued on Thursday, CITU general secretary Tapan Sen criticized the US authorities for handcuffing, chaining, and subjecting Indian immigrants to cruel conditions during their deportation process. He also denounced the Indian government’s silence, calling it a shameful display of servility.
Citing media reports, Sen highlighted a harrowing account from a deported Indian worker from Punjab, who described the ordeal as “worse than hell.” He revealed that deported individuals were forced to crawl to lavatories and eat while still in handcuffs, enduring severe physical pain and mental torture.
“Even countries like Colombia have reacted strongly to such inhuman treatment of their citizens and taken proactive steps to protect them. But the Indian government remains disgracefully silent, displaying helplessness before the USA. This is both condemnable and unacceptable,” Sen said.
With around 20,000 Indian immigrants reportedly facing deportation, CITU warned that many more could suffer the same degrading treatment unless the Indian government takes urgent action.
“This cannot be tolerated. The Union government must step up and ensure that deported Indian workers are airlifted back to the country in a dignified manner. As a sovereign nation, India must respond firmly to the US administration’s humiliating actions and safeguard the dignity of its citizens,” Sen asserted.
CITU has called for immediate diplomatic intervention, urging the Indian government to break its silence and take a stand against the US’s oppressive deportation practices.
