CM inaugurates new building of Wadanang Secondary School at Tura
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the new Building of Wadanang Secondary School, Tura which was constructed under “Supporting Human Capital Development Project in Meghalaya” funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB).
It may be mentioned that this project focuses on improvement of secondary education, infrastructure and skill development. Under this project, scores of government aided secondary and higher secondary schools in the state are being upgraded with the kind of infrastructure to improve the overall learning environment for the students and so far about 14 numbers of such schools have completed in the region.
Speaking on the occasion Conrad Sangma termed the project as a blessing for the students, for the people of Wadanang locality as well as Garo Hills and Meghalaya state as a whole. He also said this is the appropriate time to thank all those people who were instrumental in bringing the project including the Ministers of the previous government, former Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Zenith Sangma and former Local MLA, Noverfield R Marak, the present government and all the officers concerned for completing the project successfully. Moreover, he informed that the present government is keen to take this project further and said that Phase II of the ADB project is underway which would further improve the necessary requirements of various schools of the region.
Informing that Garo Hills has an average pass percentage in the whole region with regard to SSLC Examinations, the Chief Minister informed that after much deliberation and discussion with the concerned officials have decided to identify Bottom 20 schools from the region and provide special classes especially for those students appearing for the SSLC Examinations. Stating that most of the schools have four months long break during winter holidays after which the students directly appear for their examinations may be one of the reason for their bad performance and said that special classes should be given to them during this break. Further, he informed that many things are being planned to improve the education scenario in the region so that the students utilise the facilities properly and gets maximum benefit. Moreover, in the initiative to transform the education sector in the state, he said that it depends on the person who runs it to make it as a centre of excellence for the people of the region.
Chief Adviser to the Chief Minister and MLA North Tura Thomas A Sangma expressed his appreciation to all those involved in the project and hoped that the modern facilities with smart classroom, library, computers and science laboratories would help the students immensely to improve their knowledge and excel the learning capacity of the students in future.
It may be mentioned that Wadanang Government Aided Secondary School was established in 1932 which was further upgraded to Secondary School in the year 1985 and since then has been catering to the students from various parts of the region.
Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills Ram Singh, Additional Director, School Education and Literacy, Tura P Ryngsai, Chairman, Tura Municipal Board and Member SMC J D Sangma, Additional Deputy Commissioner, WGH Z J Sangma, President SMC, F K Marak, Secretary SMC F R Marak were among others who spoke at the inaugural function. Project Director, DRDA, WGH C N Sangma, Mathias Marak, Chairman Eco Development Society, Tura, Officials of various departments of the district, Headmistress, Wadanang Secondary School Tura, Merry Mercy A Sangma, Senior Citizens and people of the locality and staff and students of the School were among others present at the function.
