CM inaugurates Shillong-Mawlai Bypass and Mawkynroh police outpost
SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has appealed to the people to ensure that the Shillong-Mawlai Bypass does not become garbage dumping ground or a place for anti-social activities to thrive.
“I hope it will not become a dumping ground where people would start throwing their garbages and I hope it doesn’t become an anti-social kind of activities or a parking lot where people start parking their vehicles and this is where society comes in,” he said.
Sangma was addressing at the inaugural function of the Shillong-Mawlai Bypass and Mawkynroh Police Outpost held here on Saturday in presence of deputy CM Prestone Tynsong, Mawlai MLA PT Sawkmie, and other dignitaries.
Calling upon the citizens of Mawlai and Shillong, he said, “We must ensure that we maintain things whether its law and order, whether its anti-social elements and activities, police will do its part but I think if society also gives a helping hand it will make a big difference. I urge that you ensure when tourists come from here they will always felt welcome.”
“It is important to know that police has got its role to play, government has got its responsibility to do, politicians and officials will also do their part but at the end of the day if society does not play its role, then all the efforts put in by us will be meaningless,” he added.
The 5.5 kilometers Shillong-Mawlai bypass starts from Mawlai Mawïong till Mawlai Mawkynroh near North Eastern Hill University. Via Mawlai bypass, vehicles will reach the city without passing through the Shillong-Guwahati national highway.
Also congratulating the PWD officials, the CM said with the completion of this project, the traffic congestion along the national highway will be reduced by 30 per cent as he expressed deep appreciation to the land owners including NEHU for without their contribution this project would not have taken off.
Stating that his government is taking the congestion problem as an important issue, Sangma informed that a detailed project report (DPR) has been made for the construction of a road from Mawmaram to Mawmih – UCC up to NEPA as part of decongesting the Shillong city.
He said the road, which connects directly to the Shillong-Nongstoin road and from where people can go straight to Cherrapunjee, will be made operational and will be opened for tourists.
“I had visited the road and it is such a beautiful road and you can call it as hill view road from where we could see the entire Umiam Lake and Shillong city and I think tourists would really enjoy driving from there,” he said.
Sangma further informed that the DPR for the Shillong-Western bypass will also be ready shortly to ensure the construction of the road start at the earliest. Shillong Western bypass start from Umiam via Mawmih upto Baniun within Seventh Mile at Upper Shillong.
The chief minister also lauded the police department for working overtime to ensure the police outpost is made operational within a short span of time.
“I am sure with this police outpost coming up it will help the citizens of Mawlai area in term of law and order and all necessary help that the people of the area might need,” he said.
In his speech, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong salute the farsightedness of the former Mawlai MLA late Founder Strong Cajee and said with the inauguration of the Shillong-Mawlai Bypass today his (Cajee) dreams have been fulfilled.
He said the project was sanctioned in 2012-13 at a cost of Rs 27 crore and the work order for starting the construction was issued in 2015 adding the delay to complete the bypass was due to various reasons.
Tynsong said that the first issue taken when the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government was formed was to ensure the Mawlai bypass is completed at the earliest. “This is because the MDA under the leadership of chief minister is not here to play politics but we are here to serve the people,” he added.
The deputy chief minister also announced that the government had already issued the work order for the upgradation of the road from Mawlai-Mawroh into a double-lane road even as he appealed to land owners of the area to be ready in parting their lands for the project.
