CoHSO asks govt to incorporate provisions of ILP in state Act
SHILLONG: The Confederation of Hynniewtrep Social Organisations (CoHSO) on Thursday asked the government to incorporate provisions of the ILP in the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016 for checking influx and illegal immigrants into the state.
Speaking to reporters after meeting the Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, CoHSO Chairman and HYC President Robertjune Kharjahrin said the confederation has sought his intervention on the need to immediately implement the Inner Line Permit system in the entire state.
“He (Tynsong) has assured us that the government would be ready with the amendment of the MRSSA, 2016 before the Assembly’s budget session,” he said while quoting the Dy.CM.
Kharjahrin however said the Hynniewtrep Youth Council had already submitted its views and suggestions to the state government for its consideration to incorporate the provisions of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the Act.
He said these include the legal provision which bars any Indian or foreigner to enter the state without valid permission, to penalise any person who enters or stays in the state without permission, permission should have validity period of 179 days and to bar non-indigenous people to have land rights in the state.
“This is the ILP that we want the government to implement in letter and spirit to protect the indigenous population of the state and these provisions can be incorporated in the MRSSA, 2016 as well,” he said.
Asked, Kharjahrin informed that the views and suggestions of the HYC are being examined by the law department.
