Collaborative action urged: President Murmu advocates ‘Act East’ Policy in Northeast
In her maiden visit to Meghalaya, President of India, Droupadi Murmu was honoured with a civic reception at Raj Bhavan, Shillong by the Government of Meghalaya on Tuesday.
President Murmu expressed gratitude for the warm welcome, lauded Meghalaya’s natural beauty and hoped that the development projects inaugurated would boost the state’s economy and foster inclusive growth. Emphasizing the state’s tourism potential, she commended the Meghalaya Tourism Policy 2023 and the International Tourism Mart at Shillong, highlighting their role in creating awareness.
Referring to the ‘Act East’ policy, the President recommended collaborative efforts for connectivity, employment, and infrastructure in the Northeast, recognizing the region’s strategic importance as India’s gateway to South East Asia.
Governor Phagu Chauhan termed the visit as historic, thanking the President for inaugurating the Meghalaya Games and contributing to developmental projects. He praised her for reaching out to communities, especially women’s self-help groups, and acknowledged her as the first woman from the tribal community and the youngest President of the country.
Meghalaya’s Chief Minister thanked the President for inspiring the youth through the Meghalaya Games and for being the first President to stay at the newly inaugurated Raj Bhavan in Tura.The Governor hosted a state dinner, accompanied by a cultural program showcasing the unique traditions of the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia tribes.
