Come up with a law which says without Aadhaar you cannot vote: Adelbert to Govt

Suspended Voice of the People Party (VPP) legislator from North Shillong Adelbert Nongrum has announced that he is one of the very few legislators, who have decided not to go for Aadhaar enrolment.
Joining an anti-Aadhaar protest staged by the Awaken India Movement (AIM) here on Wednesday, Nongrum said, “We are not against Aadhaar enrolment but we urge the state and centre government that they should not force people to go for Aadhaar enrolment.”
He said the government should be reminded that they cannot deprive people of their rights to access various benefits adding “anybody attempting to do this will have to take full responsibility for their action.”
Nongrum also slammed political leaders over the problem arising out of the issue and said, “Most of them are not law makers but are money makers. If Aadhaar is made mandatory then you should also come up with a law that says without Aadhaar you cannot vote.”
He urged the people to go to their respective MDCs, MLAs, MP and said, “Don’t let them sleep, they should speak against this attitude to force use of Aadhaar.”
Recalling his 17-day fasting against the attempt to take away the powers of traditional heads/institutions in 2015, Nongrum said, “In this very same place (protest venue), I was offered Rs 6 crore by unidentified persons. They told me I should stop my fasting by my reply to them was to end my fasting there is only two ways – to pressure the Governor to grant his assent to the village administration bill passed by the district council for empowering the traditional heads and traditional institutions or for them to wait for another six days to see my dead body taken away from this place.”
The MLA said that he had to go through a lot of stigma and discrimination but finally, his fasting did not go to waste because the powers of the traditional headmen/institutions have been restored and this would not have happened without the support of the people.
Referring to the Covid pandemic times, Nongrum also claimed that he and his family had refused to take vaccines despite the huge pressure on the citizens and said, “I had to go through a lot of stigma while going to church or attending a funeral…”
According to him, the government should not try to mislead the people on such things.
