Committee headed by Tourism director to meet taxi associations next week: Paul
A government constituted committee will hold a meeting with the various tourism stakeholders including the taxi associations next week.
Informing this on Friday, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh said, “We have already constituted an expert committee led by our tourism director. He is meeting the taxi associations next week. That apart the various stakeholders of tourism have already had an engagement where in the Khasi Taxi Drivers Association were also invited and had participated just last week. Next week again, the official committee is meeting the association.”
On the demand of the taxi association to implement the Sikkim model in the state, Lyngdoh said, “See our mind is still very open. They are talking to the official committee next week. Once those talks move forward, the committee will then apprise me of possible solutions and I see there’s nothing that can’t be solved where this issue is concerned.”
The decision also came in the wake of the state government’s decision to constitute a
committee to look into various issues impacting tourist taxis and suggest solutions to the issue. The committee will comprise representatives from Tourism, Law, and Police departments, district authorities and other relevant departments besides the stakeholders. Earlier, the tourist taxi associations of Khasi Hills warned of resorting to hunger strike if the government failed to fulfill their demand for ban on tourist vehicles from outside the state plying to various tourist destinations.
