CoMSO threatens stir if govt delay in implementation of ILP
SHILLONG: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organization (CoMSO) has demanded the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government to implement the Inner Line Permit system to check influx and illegal immigration into the state, within this month.
“We demand the state government to immediately introduce the ILP system in the state within this month,” chairman of CoMSO Robertjune Kharjahrin said in a statement issued here on Wednesday.
He said the confederation also expect the state government to incorporate the provisions of the ILP in the proposed amendment of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016.
“We are always ready to work together with the state government to fine tune the rules on how to effectively implement the ILP in the state but at the same time, we are also ready to launch intensive agitation if the state government is delaying the matter,” Kharjahrin warned.
According to him, the CoMSO has already submitted its views and suggestions and it is not upto the state government to do what is necessary. He informed that the delegation of confederation have also met cabinet ministers, political leaders including opposition MLAs for their support.
Kharjahrin, also the president of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council, said that it is high time that Meghalaya put in place an effective mechanism to prevent illegal entry and settlement of outsiders especially following the publication of the Assam’s NRC.
“It is also needed in view of the Centre’s move to implement the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which seeks to wipe out indigenous tribals of the North east region,” he added.
The chairman further stated that the union home minister Amit Shah has also sent a clear message that states which wanted to avoid the CAB should implement the ILP. “Therefore, it is high time Meghalaya should wake up and implement the ILP without any further delay,” he said.
