Confusion reigns as 27 reportedly trapped in Assam coal mine; rescue operations awaited
Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the number of workers trapped in a flooded coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district.
Local sources claim that 27 miners were initially trapped in coal mine No. 19 at 3 Kilo, Umrangso, early Monday morning, but 10 managed to escape. Between 13 to 17 miners are still unaccounted for.
The flooding reportedly began around 7 am due to water overflowing into the mine, leaving those inside stranded. While the district Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has yet to confirm the details, officials have stated that the Deputy Commissioner is visiting the site to verify the situation. “If confirmed, we will immediately initiate rescue operations,” said a DDMA official.
Video footage suggests the mine lacked proper barricades, highlighting significant safety lapses. Reports from the area alleged that the mine has been operating illegally, with no adherence to safety protocols and alleged complicity from local politicians and police.
Families of the missing workers remain in anguish, with one relative stating, “My son-in-law is still trapped. I don’t know how many others are missing, but I am praying for his safety.”
The incident has exposed serious concerns over illegal mining practices and inadequate safety measures in the region. Authorities face mounting pressure to launch a swift and effective rescue operation to save the missing workers and address the systemic issues contributing to such tragedies.
