Congress likely to pull out of NPP-led EC in KHADC
The two Congress MDCs are likely to pull out of the National People’s Party (NPP)-led executive committee (EC) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) ahead of the upcoming elections, due to continued pressure from the party workers as well as from the AICC.
Sources on Sunday informed that a decision will soon be taken on the matter especially keeing in mind that Congress working president and deputy chief executive member Pynshngainlang N Syiem will be seeking reelection from the party.
“Therefore, the continued pressure may leave PN Syiem without no option but to pull out of the NPP-led EC in the KHADC,” a source said.
It may be mentioned here that the demand to withdraw support from the NPP-led EC was made by the party workers at a general meeting of the party held on September 20.
Recently, the presidents of the district congress committees (DCCs) have also written a letter to the AICC seeking its intervention into the delay of the two MDCs to pull out of the NPP-led EC in KHADC.
“We, therefore, request the AICC to issue Directives to Deputy CEM Shri PN Syiem and MLA Shri RV Lyngdoh to immediately withdraw from the NPP-Led EC. Should they fail to comply, appropriate disciplinary action must be taken against them. This is crucial to demonstrate the party’s unity and resolve to contest the elections from a strong and independent position. We remain committed to working towards the success of the INC in the upcoming elections and we believe that this step is essential to securing the trust and confidence of our supporters,” they stated in the letter to the AICC on November 26.
Following this, AICC secretary Dr Chella Kumar and joint secretary Anthony Matthew met party leaders and workers during a meeting held on December 2, to discuss the issue.
“In the meeting, AICC leaders and party workers have asked the two MDCs to take a call and pull out of the EC without any further delay. In view of this, the two MDCs will have no other option but to respect the decision of the party workers by withdrawing support to the NPP in the KHADC,” sources said.
