Congress MLA demands Civil Sub Division for Mawsynram

Congress legislator from Mawsynram Himalaya M Shangpliang has demanded the state government to upgrade the Mawsynram C&RD Block into a Civil Sub Division.

In a letter to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday, Shangpliang said, “Under your able leadership, I am confident that your government will consider the earnest desire of the people living under the Mawsynram Block by declaring a Civil Sub Division for Mawsynram along with Mairang when it is officially announced as a district.”

Lauding the the steps taken by the government to upgrade Mairang Civil Subdivision into a district, the MLA said this will enable the people of the area to see development more closely and at a faster mode.

He however reminded that several memorandums and petitions have already been submitted by various local bodies, NGOs and prominent leaders of the area, at different times, requesting the government of the day to upgrade Mawsynram into a Civil Sub Division.

Shangpliang said the topography and terrain of the area, the distance of the border areas to the district headquarter in Shillong and the poor connectivity in terms of road and communication are the key factors causing hindrances to reach out development and “therefore justifies the fact that administration has to be brought closer to the people.”
