Congress MLA demands creation of new district in plain belt of Garo Hills
Congress legislator from Rajabala constituency Dr Azad Zaman on Tuesday sought the intervention of the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma into the demand for the creation of a new district at Rajpur.
“…I would like to request you that demand for creation of a new district headquarter at Rajpur should be included in this upcoming budget for better interest and all-round development the people of the proposed district,” Dr Azad said in a memorandum submitted to the CM.
He said the Plain Belt District Demand Committee (PBDDC) has been demanding the creation of new district within West Garo Hills with its headquarter at Rajpur, which is a historical place with the area covering Phedaldoba to the east and Zekabari to the west.
The legislator said the new district would ensure administrative convenience, better implementation and monitoring of government schemes, stop large migration of rural populations to urban areas, open up new avenues for rural population and bring the administration closer to the people.
“I am aware about the fact that in our state in the past district are basically created upon the up-gradation of existing sub-division, but as my knowledge is concerned there is no rule that district are to be created by upgradation of sub-division only. District are created based upon the population, area, distance from the remote areas,” he said.
