Congress observes 76th birth anniv of Rajiv Gandhi
The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Thursday observed the 76th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi at Windermere Estate, Umpling,Shillong.
The programme started with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and paying floral tribute before the portrait of Rajiv Gandhi.
In his address, MPCC working president James S Lyngdoh, touched upon the life and contribution of Rajiv Gandhi and Supreme sacrifice made by him in protecting the Sovereignty and Integrity of the nation, and endeavour in making of a strong and self reliant nation, and in transforming India into a scientific superpower of 21 st Century.
He also stressed on Rajiv Gandhi’s milestone contribution when he passed the Anti-Defection Law, which has been seen as an effective mechanism in preventing horse trading in the Indian Politics.
In his speech, Nongthymmai MLA and President Shillong city District Congress Committee, Charles Pyngrope, mentioned how as the young Prime Minister of India he had given new directions to India in all spheres.
Speaking on the occasion, Shillong MP, Vincent H Pala spoke on how Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister of India at a young age following the assassination of his mother. He mentions how he brought about revolutions in the IT sector, which has changed the life of Indian in 21 st Century. He also recalls the fact that the Parliament members and staff pay great homage to this great personality every year.
Others who attended the programme included MPCC working president Lamphrang Blah, president East Khasi Hills DCC Kennedy C Khyriem, office bearers of the MPCC and the DCC, leaders and members of the frontal organizations. The attendance was restricted as per the COVID-19 Protocol.

After the meeting, led by Pyngrope, the Shillong City Congress distributed ‘Food Packets’ to the Mercy Home at Demthring.
