Congress reorganizes leadership in Jowai ahead of JHADC polls
Ahead of the crucial Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections on February 21, the Congress has announced a major leadership restructuring in Jowai to strengthen its position. Former Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the JHADC, Madonbai Rymbai, has been appointed president of the 2-Jowai Block Congress Committee, marking his return to the party after a six-year hiatus.
The revamped committee includes Bitos Sari as vice president, Teiwanza Challam as general secretary, Embhamiki Langbang as assistant secretary, and Esterwis Ryngkhlem as treasurer, along with other members from various units. These appointments were finalized by the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) during a meeting on January 8.
Madonbai, who will contest the upcoming JHADC election from the 4-Amwi-Khliehtyrshi constituency, emphasized the need to rebuild the party’s grassroots support. “Jowai has always been a Congress stronghold, but the lack of leadership in recent years caused supporters to feel scattered. My goal is to unite them and revive the party’s strength in the region,” he said during a press conference on January 10.
He also criticized the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) for mismanaging the council’s finances, leading to delayed salaries for council employees and dwindling revenue streams. Madonbai condemned the leasing of JHADC’s forest beat houses in Mookyndur and Ratacherra, claiming it has adversely affected revenue collection from forest and mineral resources.
Confident about Congress’ prospects, he predicted a win of at least 15–16 seats in the upcoming elections, citing growing dissatisfaction among voters with the NPP’s governance. “The people are ready for a change, and Congress is prepared to lead with strong leadership and better governance,” he added.
The January 10 meeting, which brought together Congress leaders and workers, focused on strategizing and fostering collaboration to ensure a successful campaign. With the reorganization under Madonbai’s leadership, Congress is positioning itself for a strong comeback in Jowai.
