Construction of Iawmusiang Market Complex to finally resume under the initiative of MDA-II Govt
The construction of the Iawmusiang Market Complex, Jowai, which has been an eye sore for the people of Jaintia Hills region due to the stopping of construction for the past several years will finally see the light of the day as the present NPP led MDA Government has decided to resume its construction.
As a mark of resumption of works, a foundation stone for the redevelopment of the Iawmusiang Market Complex was laid by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar in the said Market Complex Jowai on Friday afternoon in the presence of Jowai MLA and Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) Chairman Wailadmiki Shylla, JHADC Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat, West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner BS Sohliya IAS, West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police C, Syrti, MPS , PWD (Roads & Buildings) Secretary B W Phira amongst others.
Dhar also laid the foundation stone for the construction of the roads covering a total length of 38.163 km at a total cost of Rs. 50 crores for enhance connectivity in Jowai constituency namely Jowai Intermediary Road (3.2 km), Ialong (11.8 km), Salaroh (4.225 km), Litang (2.8 km), Madur Thymme (6.4 km), Niriang (2.5 km) and Mukhla (7.5 km) besides the construction of LNKT 15.1 Road under PMGSY (Rs 29 crore), Jongksha-Kharang Road connecting Niriang-Nongjrong (6.5 km) at an estimated cost of Rs 7 crore and Sabahmuswang internal road under RIDF (Rs 3 crore).
Later, Dhar inaugurated the Annexe building of the Jowai Circuit House at Loomsooiung, Newhill, which was constructed at a cost of Rs 2.14 crores
Speaking on the occasion, Sniawbhalang Dhar informed that the MDA Government has decided to resume the construction of the Iawmusiang Market Complex at a total cost of Rs 25.6 crores with Pyrkhat Hinge as the contractor and it is expected to be completed within 24 months. He also asserted that the project upon completion will significantly benefit traders, business community and local people of Jaintia Hills region.
Dwelling on the issue of waste management afflicting the people of Jowai Town, Dhar said that despite several efforts made by the Government and the Jowai Municipal Board, the waste management project could not materialize due to opposition from several corners for their self-vested interest while adding “Politics is for five years, not all 1,825 days so let us stop politicking and focus on creating a greener and cleaner environment.”
He thus appealed to all stakeholders to join hand and work together with the Government for finding a sustainable solution for waste management while making it clear that the Government will no longer take it kindly to any opposition to landfill projects.
Highlighting the state’s goal of achieving a $10 billion economy, Dhar stressed on the need for promoting tourism in Jaintia Hills region.
Meanwhile, Jowai MLA and MUDA Chairman informed that the Government is in the precess of setting up a Nursing College in West Jaintia Hills. He added that it will be avenue for creating job opportunities in the region.
Shylla informed that the Meghalaya Games 2025 will be held in the month of January next year and the coming of the Meghalaya Games will be boon to the Jaintia Hills region as there will infrastructure developments such tennis courts, swimming pool, boxing facilities, football fields, and wrestling arenas besides improvements to approach roads, colleges, schools, and water connections, involving an investment of over Rs 30 crore.
Wailadmiki called upon the residents of Jowai to work together to achieve a lasting solution for waste management making the town cleaner and more sustainable.
