Construction of new bridge over Umngot river soon: Govt
Construction of a new bridge over the Umngot River will start very soon, informed Deputy Chief Minister in-charge PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong on Thursday.
The bridge connecting Dawki in West Jaintia Hills district with East Khasi Hills district is part of Shillong-Dawki road project funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Tynsong said so far the government is satisfied with the progress of work. “As of today the works are going on in full swing,” he added.
The deputy chief minister further informed that he had also impressed upon the NHIDCL to start construction of the four lane road from Umshyrpi to Banuin, Upper Shillong in order to ease the traffic congestion in that area.
“Now, felling of trees is going on and once that is done, they will start the construction works,” he said.
When asked about the status of the much awaited Shillong Western bypass, Tynsong said that the final alignment has already been forwarded to Delhi for approval.
“Once that is done the process of land acquisition will start. In fact, the land acquisition proceedings have already started by both the deputy commissioners of Ri Bhoi as well as East Khasi Hills District,” he informed.
