Continuous rainfall causes mudslide blocks National Highway 6 in Meghalaya connecting Assam and other North-Eastern States
Continuous rainfall for four days has caused severe disruptions to the movement of commuters and vehicles from Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya, as heavy mudslides have struck the Sonapur tunnel, resulting in the blockage of National Highway 6.
The mudslide occurred at around 5 am on Saturday, leading to a complete blockade of the highway. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. However, the incident has left hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road.
The Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills District posted an alert on Facebook, urging travelers to exercise caution. He also mentioned that machinery is being deployed to clear the debris at the Sonapur tunnel.
The East Jaintia Police also shared on Facebook that the task of clearing the debris is currently ongoing. Commuters are advised to remain cautious and seek alternative routes wherever possible.
National Highway 6 holds significant importance as a transportation route for the southeastern part of the North-East Region. Unfortunately, despite the frequent occurrence of landslides and mudslides, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has not adequately addressed this recurring issue over the past decade.
