COVID-19 hampers construction of drainage project in Nongpoh
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has hampered the construction of adequate drains in Nongpoh and Umling village for the Jorabat-Umiam highway project.
Tabling a statement relating to the call attention notice by Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said the construction work is also hampered due to COVID-19 pandemic affecting mobilization of workers at site and also due to monsoon season.
Stating that the construction of drainage work is in progress, Tynsong informed that the National Highway Authority of India has directed the contractor to complete the work at the earliest.
The project was initiated based on the recommendation of the district administration of Ri Bhoi regarding flood in Nongpoh and Umling village during the rainy season.
The work was allotted to contractor M/S Basan Kumar Kakati and notice to proceed with the work was issued on November 4, 2019 and the work was started on November 18.
Tynsong said at the time of starting of the works, there was an issue of encumbrance free land due to the encroachment in NHAI land specially in Nongpoh town. However, the matter has been resolved with the help of the district administration, he said.
