COVID-19: Local cab operators seek exemption from MV Tax
The Joint Coordination Committee of Commercial Vehicles (JCCCV) has requested the state government to exempt owners of local taxis and tourist taxis from paying different motor vehicle taxes.
In a letter submitted to the Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday, the conglomeration of taxi associations have expressed concern over the financial problem faced by the owners of local and tourist taxis due to the national lockdown to combat COVID-19 pandemic.
According to them, it has become practically impossible for them to meet bank payments (loans)and difficult to provide food, medicine and other essential necessities to their families.
The commercial transportation sector has been severely affected as they were not allowed to ply their vehicles due to the lockdown.
“The earnings of the commercial transport sector has been nil…In this connection, we would like to request you to kindly exempt us from paying different taxes related to local and tourist taxis…to ease our financial situation,” the letter said.
The JCCCV is comprises of the East Khasi Hills Local Taxi Welfare Association, Hynniewtrep Tourist Taxi Association, Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association and All Shillong Tourist Taxi Driver United Organization.
