COVID-19: Meghalaya govt not to impose total lockdown
The state government has ruled out any possibility of re-imposing a total lockdown in the state, which has witnessed a rapid increase in the COVID-19 cases.
On being asked specifically on this issue during a press briefing held on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the state government has not taken any decision to impose a total lockdown in the state.
Tynsong however maintained that lockdown will continue in the state. “We have decided that lockdown in Meghalaya will continue but with further relaxations,” he said.
The total number of active cases has risen to 30 after people stranded in the different parts of the country including red zone states have returned to the state recently.
When asked, the deputy CM said lockdown is not like a curfew where people are not allowed to move out freely. “The lockdown is for you and me to ensure that we are safe,” he said.
On the other hand, Tynsong said that citizens have been properly trained on how to protect themselves through the protocols issued from time to time through the district administration as well as village dorbar during the past three months.
“Now it is the responsibility of everybody to strictly follow the protocols because we cannot simply just close down everything for four-five months as we also need to think about the livelihood activities of our people. Hence, we provide those relaxations,” he stated.
