COVID-19: Meghalaya govt restrict citizens from travelling to Assam
The state government has decided to restrict citizens from travelling to other states including neighbouring Assam, which has witnessed a sharp rise in the numbers of COVID-19 cases.
After chairing a review meeting on Friday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the government has discussed the situation in Assam, which has also announced a two-week total lockdown from June 28.
“In view of Assam’s notification, we have directed the Chief Secretary to issue orders through the respective deputy commissioners (DCs) to ensure people are restricted from going outside the state,” Tynsong said.
He said the citizens are requested to avoid travelling to Guwahati and other parts of Assam due to the prevailing situation.
“However, permission will only be granted to people who require travel due to unavoidable circumstances,” Tynsong said.
The decision was also taken after a resident of the state, who was working in Assam for two months, was tested positive for COVID-19 today.
Earlier, the state government has directed the chief secretary to further strengthen the entry-exit points to ensure entry of people from other states is restricted.
