COVID-19’s shadow over Nongkrem dance festival
There will be no public celebration of the popular festival – the Shad Nongkrem, which will begin on November 24.
The state government has laid down strict norms during the festival at Smit village, in view of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Deputy Syiem of Hima Khyrim, Habapan Sing Syiem said that the festival, that normally draws large public, would be held at Iing Sad (thatched palace), though with a lot of restrictions to contain the spread of the virus.
He said this time for the first time, visitors and the public will not be allowed to witness the festival.
“As part to contain the spread of the viral disease, the Hima has to follow strict protocols issued by the state government through the health and family welfare department,” Syiem said while informing that the market near the Iing Sad will remain closed during the festival.
According to the order issued by the East Khasi Hills district magistrate on November 9, while granting permission for the celebration, no visitors are allowed at the main venue during the festival.
It said not more than 30 participants will be allowed to attend the Pomblang on November 24 and not more than 82 participants for Bujai Blang on November 25.
It said not more than 40 male and female dancers will be allowed on the ground during the Shad Kynthei and Shad Shynrang at Iing Sad.
Only invited participants along with the Syiem and the Myntris are allowed at the ground for the performance of the rituals. The remaining guests are to occupy the seats in the gallery and ensure physical distancing, the order.
