Critical floods in Assam: Rescue teams on standby, 6.44 Lakh affected; PM Modi and Shah assure help
The flood situation in Assam turned critical on Monday with the fresh death of one more person taking the toll to 35, an official bulletin of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said here on Monday.
“The situation has prompted the state government to keep NDRF and Army on standby to deal with any emergency,” Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said addressing a press conference here on Monday.
“The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall for the next two to three days. Heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh has triggered floods in the state,” Sarma said.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah called me and assured of all help to deal with the situation,” Sarma said.
“All ministers, MLAs and officials have been asked to monitor the situation closely,” the chief minister added.
One death case has been reported from Tinsukia district. The body of Mohan Yadav (50) was recovered from a pond at Gabharubheti village of Philobari area on Monday morning. He fell from a bamboo bridge when crossing the area and died.
One person has been missing from Khumtai in Golaghat.
6,44,128 people from 1,275 villages under 64 revenue circles in 19 districts are affected by the deluge.
The affected districts are- Kamrup, Golaghat, Majuli, Lakhimpur, Karimganj, Cachar, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Udalguri, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Darrang, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Biswanath and Jorhat.
Lakhimpur is the worst affected district followed by Dhemaaji and Cachar district.
In Lakhimpur, 1,43,983 people from 220 villages under Subansiri, North Lakhimpur, Dhakuakhana, Kadam, Nowboicha, Bihpuria and Narayanpur revenue circles have been affected by the deluge.
In Dhemaji, 1,01,333 people from 207 villages under Dhemaji, Gogamukh, Jonai and Sissiborgaon revenue circles have been affected.
In Cachar, 66,195 people from 55 villages under Silchar and Katigorah revenue circles have been affected.
In Majauli, 64,392 people from 83 villages under Majuli and Ujani Majuli revenue circles have been affected.
Tinsukia 57,422 people from 95 villages under Margherita, Doomdooma, Tinsukia and Sadiya revenue circles have been affected.
In Golaghat district, 55,909 people from 59 villages under Khumtai, Dergaon and Bokakhat revenue circles have been affected by the floods.
A total of 26199.18 hectares of cropland was submerged by flood water across the state.
72 relief camps and 64 relief distribution centres have been opened for the affected people.
8,142 inmates have been sheltered in the relief camps while 46,115 non-camp inmates have been provided food and other relief materials from the relief distribution centres.
The authorities have provided 2,754.74 quintals of rice, 506.98 quintals of dal, 151.97 quintals of salt and 15042.51 litres of mustard oil to the affected people across the state.
Three domestic animals have been washed away and 4,85,736 have been affected by the floods.
The flood damaged dwelling houses, roads, bridges, and dams in many other places snapping road communication with the remote villages.
The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level mark at Tezpur, Neematighat and Dibrugarh, Subansiri at Badatighat), Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat, Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang), Jia-Bharali at Nt Road Crossing), Beki at Barpeta and Kushiyara is flowing the danger level mark at Karimganj.
Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted continuing heavy to very heavy rainfall spell over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya today. It said subdued rainfall activity is likely over the rest parts of the country during the next five days.
