CWC still examining DPR to protect border villages from Umngi river
Minister in-charge Water Resources, Brolding Nongsiej has informed that the department has initiated in taking up construction works for the protection and anti erosion measures of Umngi river along Balat, Dangar and Lalpani vilage in East Khasi Hills district.
“The detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared and submitted to the Central Water Commission (CWC) Regional Office, Shillong for examination,” Nongsiej said in his reply to a query raised by Mawsynram legislator Himalaya M Shangpliang in the Assembly on Wednesday.
He also informed that emergency measures are being taken up by providing bamboo palasiding filled with sand bags to protect bank erosion of Balat village and market area which was sanctioned through state plan.
Earlier, Shangpliang has expressed concern that no action seem to be happening despite the fact that every year a lot of plantation and households including a temple and church have been washed away by the Umngi river.
He also sought to know the status of the proposal for taking up anti-erosion project submitted to the Centre, the minister informed that the DPR with an estimated cost of Rs 105.126 crore is under examination of the CWC, Regional Office, Shillong. He also assured that the department will conduct follow up with the CWC.
