Death toll mounts to 25 in Assam floods, 2.48 lakh affected in 8 districts
Flood situation in Assam further worsened with the death of one more person in Cachar district taking the death toll to 25 in the first wave, according to the official bulletin of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Rahib Ali (68), son of Faejan Ali from Tarapur Jabalpur under Katigorah revenue circle of Cachar district.
Presently, Kopili is flowing above the danger level in Kampur and Dharamtul and Kushiyara is flowing above the danger level in Karimganj, the ASDMA said.
Altogether 2,46,813 people of 375 villages under 19 revenue circles in eight districts were affected by the deluge.
The affected districts are Cachar, Karimganj, Morigaon, Hojai, Nagaon, Dima-Hasao, Hailakandi and West Karbi Anglong.
Nagaon is worst affected with 1,40,224 population from 129 villages under Raha, Kampur, Nagaon revenue circles followed by Cachar with 65,546 population from 107 villages under five revenue circles- Silchar, Katigorah, Udharbond, Lakhipur and Sonai.
Hojai is the third worst-affected district with 18,448 population from 19 villages under three revenue circles- Doboka, Hojai and Lanka.
A total of 5055.6 crop areas have been damaged by the floods across the state, the ASDMA said.
133 relief centres, including 21 relief distribution centres have been opened for the affected people.
22,373 inmates, including 147 pregnant women and 4,920 children have taken shelter in these relief camps. 15,887 non-camp inmates have been provided food materials in 21 relief distribution centres.
501.48 quintals of rice, 91.47 quintals of dal, 28.07 quintals of salt and 2685.07 litres of mustard oil were distributed among the affected people.
Apart from this, floods also damaged embankments, public roads, bridges and other infrastructures.
Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rainfall activity in the state till June 7.
