Death toll mounts to 66 in Assam floods, 22.74 lakh affected in 28 districts
The flood situation in Assam is showing some improving signs, even as 8 more people died, taking the toll to 66 in the state in the last 24 hours, an official bulletin of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said here on Sunday.
Of the eight fresh deaths, 2 have been reported each from Dhubri and Nalbari, 1 each from Cachar, Goalpara, Dhemaji and Sivasagar in the last 24 hours.
No report of missing cases has been received so far.
22,74,289 people from 3,446 villages under 97 revenue circles of 28 districts have been affected by the deluge, the ASADMSA bulletin said.
The water level in the Kaziranga National Park is receding even as 20 per cent of the park area is still under floodwater.
129 wild animals died in Kaziranga National Park, 96 others were rescued by forest personnel during the floods.
26 animals are under treatment, 50 were released after treatment.
Of 233 forest camps, 68 are still under floodwater.
The affected districts are – Kamrup, Nagaon, Cachar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Morigaon, Hailakandi, Bongaigaon, South Salmara, Dibrugarh, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Nalbari, Charaideo, Biswanath, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Majuli, Kamrup (M), Darrang, Sivasagar, Chirang and Tinsukia.
Three districts- Karbi Anglong, Kamrup metro and dibrugarh have been affected by the urban floods.
Dhubri is worst affected with 7,54,791 population, followed by Cachar with 1,77,928 population and Barpeta with 1,34,328 population affected by bthe deluge.
Rescue operations have been continued by NDRF, SDRF and state police at various affected areas.
70 people have been evacuated from various affected areas in the last 24 hours. 171 boats have been puit into service for relief and rescue operations.
The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur and Dhubri, Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang)), Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri at Numaligarh), Kopili at Dharamtul, Beki at Road Bridge, Sankosh at Golokganj, Barak at BP Ghat and Kushiyara is flowing above the danger level at Karimganj.
The authorities are running 269 relief camps and 361 relief distribution centres for the affected people across the state.
53,689 affected people sheltered at the relief camps while 3,15,520 non-camp inmates received food and other relief materials from the relief distribution centres.
63332.81 quintals of rice, 1162.45 quintals of dal, 345.2 quintals of salt and 29,168.63 quintals of mustard oil were distributed to the affected people.
214 animals were washed away while 15,63,426 animals were affected by the deluge. 250 quintals of green fodder, 14715.7 quintals of wheat bran and 3400.45 quintals of rice bran were distributed for the affected livestock.
