Death toll rises to 72 in Assam floods, 18.80 lakh affected
Even as the water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries is receding continually, the state’s flood situation is still critical.
Six more people lost their lives on Monday taking the total death toll in the second wave of floods to 72,.
2 death cases have been reported in Dhubri, one each from Goalpara, Golaaghat, Sivasagar and Sonitpur districts.
18,80,783 people from 3,154 villages under 91 revenue circles in 27 districts have been affected by the deluge.
The affected districts are- Dhubri, Cachar, Kamrup, Goalpara, Hailakandi, Nalbari, Karimganj, Bongaigaon, Golaghat, South Salmara, Jorhat, Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Charaideo, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Majuli, Barpeta, Biswanath, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Darrang, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Kamrup (M) and Tinsukia.
Dhubri is the worst affected with 4,72,848 followed by Cachar with 2,01,572 population and Barpeta with 1,35,918 population affected by the deluge.
The authorities are running 245 relief camps and 298 relief distribution centres across the state.
48,124 people have taken shelter in the relief camps while 2,97,376 non-camp inmates received food and other relief materials from the relief distribution centres.
The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati and Dhubri, Subansiri at Badatighat, Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang), Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat, Kopili at Dharamtul, Sankosh at Golokganj, Barak at BP Ghat and Kushiyara is flowing above the danger level ay Karimganj.
15,18,606 animals have been affected by the floods.
Apart from NDRF and SDRF, local vovlunteers and state police are launching rescue operation in affected areas and 239 people have been evacuated in the last 24 hours.
The authorities have distributed 4585.71 quintals of rice, 841.14 quintals of dal, 248.98 quintals of salt and 24113.64 litres of mustard oil among the affected people.
