Demand of Law University in Jaintia Hills gains momentum
The demand for establishing the National Law University in Jaintia Hills region initiated by the Society for the Study of Law gained momentum with traditional heads and social organizations and prominent citizens of the region joining the bandwagon to pressurize the Meghalaya Government for the fulfillment of their legitimate demand as there is no institution of national importance in the region till date.
The Society and the traditional heads and social organizations under the banner of National Law University Demand Committee organized a public meeting at Iungwalieh Tpeppale, Jowai on Saturday.
The Committee comprised the Society for the Study of Law, Jaintia Students Union, Jaintia Students Movement, Jaintia Youth Federation, FKJGP Jaintia Hills Zone, KSU Jaintia Hills, Synjuk Ki Waheh Shnong Jowai, Synjuk ki Waheh Shnong Ri Jaintia and prominent citizen of Jowai.
Seinraij Jowai President OR Shallam urged all the pressure groups and civil societies leaders to come up together to pressurize the government to set up the law university in Jaintia Hills region. He also rued that most of the institutes were proposed to be setup in Jaintia but were taken away to other districts in the final stage.
Shallam said Jaintia Hills region has been neglected and deprived of all basic development either in road, health care or education. He recalled that Jowai has also failed to get the university College and nursing institute which was proposed to set up in Jowai.
Rupaia Lamar said that much talked NEHU Campus and Engineering College in Jaintia Hills did not materialized till date.
He also said that Jaintia Hills has produced numerous barristers, professors who serve the state and questioned the Government what Jaintia Hills has achieved after 50 years of Statehood.
The meeting was presided by Rupaia Lamar (President of the Committee) and was attended by founder member of Khadar Daloi Law College Dr. Prof PM Passah and Secretary Demand Committee JB Laloo amongst others.
After a threadbare discussion, they resolved to organise more public meeting in East Jaintia Hills and West Jaintia Hills to create awareness among the general public on the need to setup National Law University.
The meeting also decided to submit fresh memorandum to the Government and all the elected public representatives of Jaintia Hills and MPs of the state with an appeal to support their demand of setting up National Law University in Jaintia Hills region.
The Meghalaya Government approved National Law University of Meghalaya Ordinance, 2022 on July last.
