Deputy CM calls for empowerment of persons with disabilities at Ummulong event
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, speaking at the International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebration in Ummulong, called for empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring their active participation in society.
He emphasised the importance of leveraging schemes and programmes offered by the Social Welfare Department in areas such as education, healthcare, skill development, livelihood opportunities, and essential services. Dhar urged parents to actively engage with these initiatives and visit the Social Welfare Office for guidance on applications, eligibility, and benefits.
The event, held at Sein Raij Community Hall on Thursday, was organised by the District Social Welfare Office, West Jaintia Hills, in collaboration with the People Welfare Development Society under the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”
Additional Deputy Commissioner DV Lyngdoh motivated the audience with an inspiring speech, highlighting the achievement of Alexander Lyngdoh, who won an international arm-wrestling award despite physical challenges.
C.A. Ram Kyndiah from the District Research Centre on Disabilities Affairs, Civil Hospital Ialong, emphasised the importance of disability certificates and the Unique Disability ID (UDID) card. He explained that these documents ensure access to benefits such as financial assistance, educational support, employment reservations, and healthcare subsidies.
Lawyer I. Khyriem provided insights into the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, while District Social Welfare Officer Y. Najiar elaborated on the event’s theme.
The programme also included games, activities, and a medical check-up led by Dr. L. Rymbai from Ummulong CHC, with free medicines and gifts distributed to participants.
