Disability identification cum assessment camp held in East Jaintia Hills
A Disability Identification cum Assessment Camp was conducted for people with disabilities in East Jaintia Hills District at Jaintia Eastern College on Thursday.
Organized by the Deputy Commissioner Office in collaboration with Saksham Foundation (NGO), State Resource Centre and Kyrmen Foundation.
The objective of the event was to extend the benefits of the ADIP Scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice, Government of India through which free aid and implements are provided to the people with disabilities. As per this scheme, people with locomotor disabilities, cerebral palsy, and hand deformities are provided free of cost prosthetics, artificial limbs, and wheelchairs as applicable. Moreover, children aged less than 5 years and having auditory disabilities are provided free of cost Cochlear Implantation surgery otherwise costing Rs 12 lakhs.
Minister of Social Welfare Kyrmen Shylla graced the inaugural event as Chief Guest. Others who were also present in the event were Abhilash Baranwal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat, Mithun Roy, Saksham representative, Dr. Phervision Nongtdu, Principal Jaintia Eastern College, S. Marwein, EAC, East Jaintia Hills District, R. Passah, District Social Welfare Officer, East Jaintia Hills District and Fourness Dhar, President Kyrmen Foundation,
To facilitate the beneficiaries, services were provided for beneficiaries during the camp that included measurements and assessments for people needing prosthetics and artificial limbs carried out on the spot by representatives from National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities, Kolkata.
All the beneficiaries having disabilities were registered by the representatives from Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities (PDUNIPPD) which will be responsible for sending the person specific aids and implements later. A separate counter was established for the eligibility of children with auditory issues and aged less than 5 years for Cochlear Implantation Surgery.
Furthermore, on-spot disability certificates were issued with the help of the Disability Rehabilitation Centre, Ialong Help Desk On-spot income certificates were also issued with the help of the respective Block Development Offices help desk. The transportation from their respective villages was provided through District Administration and Kyrmen Foundation.
The event was one of its kind in the entire state of Meghalaya where people with disabilities like locomotor disabilities, cerebral palsy, hand deformities, and children less than 5 years of age with hearing disabilities were provided all services at one spot. The aids and implements will be distributed shortly after being received from Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities (PDUNIPPD).
The total number of registration of people with disabilities is 222 and the total number of registration for appliances is 117. For Artificial limbs, 32 persons were screened out of which 13 were found eligible, and for Cochlear Implantation 1 child has been found eligible. It may also be mentioned that the event was a massive success with more than 200 beneficiaries and more than 13 people will receive artificial limbs shortly and one child will get free of cost Cochlear implantation.
