District level science seminar on “Artificial Intelligence: Potentials & Concerns” held in Jowai
A District level science seminar on the topic “Artificial Intelligence: Potentials & Concerns” was held on 29th August at RMSA Government Secondary School, Jowai, West Jaintia Hills District.
Organised by the office of the District School Education Officer (DSEO), West Jaintia Hills District, the seminar witnessed active participation from students of various schools across the district. The participants presented key points on the advantages and drawbacks of AI technology. The event was judged by P Passah, District Informatics Officer, NIC; Roibok Pohrmen, e-District Manager, IT Department, Khliehriat; and T Bamon, Lecturer in Computer Science, Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai.
Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills District, B Sohliya, in his speech as the Chief Guest, remarked that AI has been in application for a long time in various fields, including complex projects like the creation of the Atom Bomb. However, the term “AI,” coined by scientists, has gained popularity only recently. He highlighted concerns like global warming that require immediate attention and suggested that AI could be instrumental in finding solutions.
He also encouraged students to engage their creativity in school projects, which could lead to transformative innovations in the future.
District School Education Officer, A P Syiem, was also present at the event.
Certificates were awarded to the winners of the seminar: Gary Reuben Nongpluh from H K Singh Secondary School, Jowai, secured the first prize, while Embhah Mary Rymbai from St. Mary Mazzarello Girls Higher Secondary School, Jowai, and Lewakani Langbang from Clear Water Secondary School, Shangpung, won the second and third prizes, respectively.
