District Magistrate ordered PWD & Dhar Construction to stop construction of New Jowai Bypass

Alarmed with the contamination of Myntdu River due to the flow of debris from the ongoing earth work for the new Jowai Bypass from Khliehtyrchi to Treiongriang, West Jaintia District Magistrate has ordered the PWD and M/s Dhar Construction Company to stop the ongoing construction of the road till suitable measures are adopted to prevent the flow of debris to Myntdu River.
The order was issued under the provision of Section 144 CrPC was necessitated as it was observed that the quality of water in the Myntdu River and its tributaries are severely affected and muddy due to erosion and depositing of debris in the important catchment areas of Myntdu River.
Due to the flow of earth from the ongoing earth work, the water of Myntdu River turned muddy leading to contamination of water facilities of the PHE Jowai and subsequent supply of muddy water to households in Jowai Town.

The District Magistrate prohibited Sand mining and stone quarries all along the river Myntdu and on the river bed.
The order also banned the washing of clothes and vehicles, dumping of spoils and waste material (Solid/Liquid) along the course of Myntdu River and waste/muck from road construction into Myntdu River.
Dumping of waste in the Myntdu River including diapers and sanitary pads also stand prohibited.
