Doctor leaves bandage inside body during surgery, A’chik group demands action
The A’chik State People’s Front (ASPF) has called on the Meghalaya Health Department to investigate a serious case involving a health surgeon accused of leaving a bandage inside a patient’s abdomen during surgery in January this year. The incident reportedly occurred during a surgical procedure, which resulted in complications for the patient. ASPF raised concerns about the negligence of the surgeon and demanded a thorough probe into the surgeon’s actions.
In a memorandum submitted to Meghalaya Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Wednesday, ASPF general secretary Bernita Marak raised a serious allegation of medical negligence at Jengjal Subdivisional Hospital in West Garo Hills district. The complaint centred around Dr. Suzie Paul Francis, a surgeon at the hospital, who allegedly left a bandage inside a patient’s abdomen during surgery, critically endangering the patient’s life.
“The patient, Mensila N. Marak from Lower Nengsa, North Garo Hills, suffered significant complications as a result of this error,” the memorandum stated.
ASPF called for an immediate probe into the incident, stressing that such negligence is unacceptable and poses serious risks to patient safety. They urged the health department to investigate and hold those responsible accountable to prevent future occurrences.
“On January 29, Mensila N Marak was admitted to Jengjal Subdivisional Hospital for a cesarean section. During the procedure, it has come to light that Dr Suzie Paul Francis carelessly left a bandage inside Marak’s abdomen. This oversight has not only caused her severe pain and discomfort but also poses a severe health threat,” the ASPF said.
“We request an immediate investigation into this matter to determine the extent of negligence and to hold Dr Suzie Paul Francis accountable for her actions. It is imperative that such cases of medical malpractice are addressed promptly to prevent similar incidents in the future,” the memorandum added.
