Don Bosco Youth Center under the leadership of Father Michael Makri and Assistant Professor English department St. Anthony’s College Jacob Shylla had taken up the initiative to provide free coaching classes to Common University Entrance Test (CUET) aspirants at Don Bosco Youth Center, Laitumkhrah, Shillong.
Saturday was the last day of the coaching class and the young students seem prepared to take on the examination which will be held examinations will be held from May 15 to May 24, the pen and paper format will be held from May15 to May 18, the computer-based format will be held from May 21, 22 and 24.
“We started giving these free tutorials to CUET/UG aspirants after I was invited by Father Makri who is in charge of the Don Bosco Youth Center. This is a very good initiative taken up by Father Makri to provide the students with an opportunity to become familiar with the CUET/UG format and in the last 4 weeks, every Saturday, we have been meeting from 10 am to 12 pm for coaching,” he said.
He informed that the students are being guided on how to prepare the formats consisting of the pen and paper format and the computer-based test format, students are being familiarised on the question pattern, and links are being provided to free resources, free lectures that the students can download.
He added that students can get access to ncert.nic.in, wherein they can download the materials such as textbooks, notes, extra reading materials including NCERT videos on Youtube for CUET examinations.
Shylla said, “At DBYC, what Father Makri has done is that he has open the doors for all the students who are able to come. We have had 200 students joining us every Saturday. They come with a lot of eagerness, with a lot of curiosity, with a lot of hope. So today is the last day that we will be providing the coaching to the students.”
He observed that students are rather familiar with the question pattern especially students coming from schools having NCERT curriculum whereas those students who are from different boards who are not familiar with the NCERT curriculum may find problems.
In this connection, he said that the NCERT textbooks have been made freely available to the students by directing them to the website.
Shylla observed that there are centers offering coaching for CUET (PG) but few organizations conduct CUET (UG) coaching.
“Looking at the way things are developing, CUET (UG) is going to be more difficult as the years go by. We might have more challenging questions, it would be wonderful if organizations, NGOs, schools and other communities come together to provide such kind of coaching whether it is free or at a minimal price to enable students to get access to these training,” he added.
As for the students, Shylla remarked that the students are working very hard.
“Students coming from rural areas might be facing some problems because first of all they need access to computers so that they will be able to get access to reading materials, they will need access to the internet. But what we have done in DBYC through Father Makri’s initiative is that he has opened the lab to them,” he said.
Alban Dohling who is waiting for his 12th results said that the coaching class has been very beneficial to him and he thanked Father Makri and Professor Shylla for taking some time out of their busy schedules to help the students.
Mebanaihun Syiemlieh, who is waiting for her 12th Commerce, she took the opportunity of the free coaching classes and felt that it has helped boost her confidence.
Shylla expressed surprise that not many students registered for the programme although it is free, there were 300 students who registered but only 200 students attend the free coaching.
