Dr Kharlukhi asserts need to strengthen ADCs in Meghalaya
Lone NPP Rajya Sabha MP Dr WR Kharlukhi has asserted the need to strengthen the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in the state.
Speaking to media persons, Dr Kharlukhi said, “We can promise heaven and earth during elections but let us first strengthen what we have and that is the district councils.”
“You know very soon if the amendment of the Sixth Schedule comes villages will get direct funding. Why should we be an obstacle to this. Let us first get this,” he said while reacting to a question on the demand for implementation of Article 371 in the state.
Refusing to comment further on the matter, Dr Kharlukhi said people should remember what happened to Kashmir, which is covered under Article 371.
He however said the state has suggested the need to delete para 12 A of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India.
“The matter is pending with a committee. They are at a final stage and is still waiting for the views of some more ADCs and once that is completed it will go to the cabinet and then Parliament,” Dr Kharlukhi added.
Further, the MP said “The state Assembly had passed resolution on ILP and Khasi language and we hope we will get these before 2028 elections.”
