Drug issue need to be taken up at a regional level: Conrad
SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today said the problem of drug menace is a matter that needs to be taken up at a regional level.
According to him, the issue is related across the border in the sense that it is beyond Meghalaya.
“We have mentioned this at different levels including bureaucrats in New Delhi as well as political leaders. May be in the next few weeks or months we may have a joint discussion about this but right now it is not confirm yet,” Sangma told reporters at the sidelines of a function held here on Tuesday.
He however said at the state level it is because of the actions being taken that these things are coming out while referring to arrests and seizures made by the state police recently.
Asked about on the state drug policy, the chief minister however said, “There is drug policy for medicines (but) there is no drug policy for this (issue).”
On the issue of human trafficking, Sangma said this has been going on for quite sometimes and the state government has noticed this and directed the police to take action adding “That is the reason why things started coming out of the cupboard. It is because of the police actions because of the orders given by us that these activities have been monitored.”
“This is the kind of situation prevailing for many years but it never came out because action was never taken and therefore you don’t see concerted effort in that line,” he said adding “Now the aggressiveness is even more specially when it comes to human trafficking, it is an issue we are concern about and we are not going to take this very likely and in fact a lot of Intel have been collected in the past few months after we decided that we will go aggressively behind this and that is the reason things are happening and let it happen let more things come out I don’t think it is appropriate for me to talk about it more.”
