Dy.CM says no shortage of essential items, urges citizens not to panic
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Friday urged the citizens not to panic as the government is only putting in place containment measures in the four places of the state to curb the spread of the COVID-19.
The ten-day containment for Shillong urban agglomeration, Jowai, Tura and Ri Bhoi will start from 5 am on Saturday and will continue till 5 am on May 10.
Speaking to media persons, Tynsong said Shillong has witnessed traffic jams today as people seemed to be panicky ahead of the containment period.
“Therefore, I request all citizens not to panic as the government has already taken all steps to make sure people are not at all affected due to the containment measures imposed in these places in the state,” he said.
Stating that it is only a partial lockdown where essential services are allowed to operate, Tynsong also reassures that there is no shortage of essential commodities in the state.
“I am looking after the Food and Civil Supplies department too and I monitor the stock regularly. Therefore, buy as usual because there is no question of shortage of any essential items in our state,” he said.
Asked, Tynsong said all the Deputy Commissioners (Supply) have been asked to make sure that traders do not take advantage of the situation since the stock is there, there is no reason for them to hike the price of essential commodities.
Meanwhile, the deputy chief minister said that the intention of the government to put in place the containment measures was to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 to rural areas.
“if we can contain in these areas I am sure we will be able to reduce to the extent where the spread will not take place in the rural areas,” he said while urging people to avoid unnecessary movement to the containment areas declared by the government during the 10 day period.
